Chapter 13 – Ambush

Tori stayed up as Deyja and I set our blankets a safe distance from the fire. As I laid down, Deyja crawled on top of me, her mouth finding mine. I was instantly hard, my hands coming up to cup her breasts.

“What the fuck?” Tori screeched, “You’re still going to let her consume your Essence? Even now that you know?”

“Do you want to watch?” Deyja asked, grinning wickedly. To my shock, she actually meant it.

“No!” Tori said, crossing her arms. She turned her back on us, but I couldn’t help noticing that she kept turning her head ever so slightly.

“Maybe we shouldn’t,” I said, “It feels a little weird doing it right next to her. Maybe we should just cuddle tonight.”

Deyja’s eyes gleamed with the flames that had nothing to do with the campfire. “But Gabe, I’m so hungry for you. I need you so badly. And… I can feel your need for me, too.”

Tori leapt to her feet. “Holy shit, she’s telling you she’s going to eat you!”

I shrugged, giving her an awkward grin. “I don’t mind. Maybe we can go over there.” I gestured in a random direction. I didn’t really care which way we went. I didn’t really want to cuddle. I wanted Deyja just as bad.

“That defeats the point of me keeping watch!”

Deyja rolled off, and suddenly the night felt colder. “Fine,” she pouted, “But after we get to Toad Town, you’re all mine.”

“I promise.”

Tori stared at me in disbelief, her large mouth hanging open. “I don’t believe this. You might be a Renegade, but you act like Prey.”

Deyja jumped to her feet.

“It’s okay, babe,” I said, “Every relationship has its struggles.”

“No, hush,” she said, “They’re coming.”

I shivered, not knowing who exactly ‘they’ were.

Tori pulled her blades from her belt, Deyja and I grabbing our weapons as well. I’d been too distracted to hear their approach. Truthfully, I think all three of us had been.

The ring of light from our campfire illuminated toads everywhere. They’d surrounded us while we played around and argued.

“We can take them, right?” I asked.

Tori braced for combat but didn’t answer. Neither did Deyja, and that worried me. We wouldn’t get any sleep tonight. If we survived this, we’d have to flee again, and heading toward the hag suddenly didn’t sound like the best idea.

We had weapons, this time, and that had to give us an edge.

Words appeared in the air as multiple toads croaked their toxic belch, and before I could even draw my hand axe, our camp filled with the foul cloud.

I staggered back, trying to find some breathable air. My eyes and lungs burned as I fell to my knees, retching.

Tori leapt, shooting out of the cloud with both daggers clenched. For a brief instant I thought maybe she could save us, until a tongue whipped about her ankle and slammed her into the ground. She didn’t move.

I gagged, unable to focus, unable to see straight, unable to keep the gas from my lungs. The poisonous cloud reminded me of the taste of the demon core that I’d consumed, times a thousand.
