Chapter 19
Lilah
This is the third time Iâve ridden behind a guy, but this time is a little different than the others. Iâm not worried the way I was when I rode with Samson or blushing self-consciously the way I did when Felix deliberately put my fingers on top of his happy trail. Right now, Iâm mad. The angry rumble of the engine underneath me matches the growling fury inside. Zip is such a dick. He riles me up in all the wrong ways, and heâs been an asshole from the first moment I met him.
So, why . . . Why am I such a masochist? Why am I here clinging to him and being his wingwoman for this meeting when I could easily have sent one of the other guys?
Logic doesnât give me a good answer. I canât piece together enough ragged excuses to make any kind of worthwhile reason, and Iâm definitely not going to examine the tangle of emotions inside my chest. Instead of determining why Iâm here, I decide to punish Zip for the fact that I am. I dig my nails into his torso, scratching down through his shirt.
I hate that I find a solid six pack underneath his clothes. I wish it was a pot belly. I wish that his face and body were as ugly as his personality. But no, heâs beautiful. Utterly gorgeous in a way that makes him almost painful to look at. I dig my nails in, punishing him for his rudeness and for the fact that heâs so beguilingly attractive.
When I hear him give a sharp hiss, I smile.
âIf you draw blood, baby girl, I will too. And once I get started, I donât know that Iâll want to stop. I might just drain you.â
My fingers instantly uncurl. I want to hurl insults at Zip, but he actually likes those. Thatâs where heâs comfortable. So rather than leave him in his comfort zone, I decide it would be far worse for him if I throw him outside of it completely by telling him the truth.
âSorry. Youâre kind of annoyingly hot, and I think you deserve to be punished for it.â
A surprised chuckle escapes his lips, and the sound takes me completely off-guard. Iâm not sure Iâve heard Zip utter a solitary sound of pure amusement since I first met him a few days ago. Suddenly, I regret the fact that Iâm behind him because I wish I could see the expression that goes along with that sort of laugh.
Before I get a chance to comment further, heâs pulling up to a curb outside a greasy spoon diner with a full parking lot. A pair of djinn float out the door, sparkling gold tails of smoke trailing behind them as they clutch doggie bags that give off the distinctly delicious scent of cinnamon twists.
My mouth waters, and I regret the fact that Zip will probably not have the patience to wait for me to grab a to-go order of those after this little chat with his vampire pals.
