As the hours turned into days, tension inside the house steadily increased. The German commander demanded our surrender several times, but it was obvious that he had no idea how he was going to get us out of the house. On the third night of the siege he resorted to blaring classical music at us. It did not really bother me since I only needed a few hours of sleep per night anyway, but the lack of rest took its toll on the other members of the squad. I found Private Mancini pacing in the living room and muttering to himself as I emerged from one of the bedrooms early in the morning of the fourth day of the standoff. Sarge had proven to be ineffective at raising the moral of his troops, so I took it upon myself to engage the soldier from Brooklyn.
âI donât know much about you, Mancini,â I began. âYou have a sweetheart back home?â
âI did,â Mancini said as he continued to pace. âBut I found out before I left for this mission that the bitch is sleeping with another man, a 4-F.â
âHum,â I said in disappointment. âHow about family? Are you close with your family?â
âMy brother is the one who she has been cheating on me with,â Mancini clarified.
âOuch. How about career prospects?â I pivoted. âDo you have a job lined up when you get back home?â
âMy dad wants me to take over the family farm,â Mancini muttered.
âThat sounds like it would be nice,â I said.
âNot really,â he countered. âI was born and raised in Brooklyn. I donât know shit about agriculture. Plus I have an unnatural fear of livestock and terrible allergies.â
âAny hobbies?â I tried.
âNope,â Mancini answered. âI have absolutely nothing to live for.â
âYou sure donât,â I agreed. I patted his shoulder reassuringly. âDonât worry, son. You are definitely going to survive this war.â
âIâm sick of this goddamn slop,â Sarge declared as he entered the living room. He threw the fork he had been holding down to emphasize his point. âIf I have to eat another K-ration Iâm going to blow my brains out.â
Lucy emerged from the kitchen and shot Sarge a puzzled look. There was an apple in her left hand, and she had to finishing chewing and swallow before she could address him. âThe fruit back there hasnât turned yet. Even when it does we wonât have to worry about food for a few weeks. The pantry is overflowing with stuff to eat. You donât have to choke down those K-rations.â
âDonât bother,â Mancini said to Lucy as he bit the top off of one of his fingernails. âThe mook would rather have something to complain about.â
âHow about you, Nick,â Lucy asked me with concern. âDo you need to eat something... or someone?â
âIâll be fine,â I answered.
âYou sure? You could always eat that German prisoner Fritz or Karl or whatever the hell his name is,â she suggested.
âNah, I wouldnât feel right about it. Heâs Wehrmacht not SS,â I explained.
âWhatâs the difference?â Lucy inquired. She nodded greetings as most of the rest of the squad entered the room with their breakfasts.
