Chapter Seventeen

Gabe followed Cress down the hallway to her bedroom and when he pushed the door shut behind them, she didn’t even look at him. The fact she seemed to accept his presence so easily did something to him he couldn’t describe.

He clicked the door shut, watching her easy grace. The way she shrugged her dressing gown off her shoulders, gathered and trailed it behind her…

Gabe gulped, both hands behind his back, palms against the door. Holding himself up.

“How do you do it?” Cress sat on the far side of the bed, keeping her back turned.

The duvet was all over the place. If he didn’t know better he’d think she’d had company but she’d obviously just been tossing and turning…

“Gabe?”

Shaking himself, he asked, “Sorry, what?”

“I asked how you do it.”

“Do what?”

She tutted and turned her head, only as far as the shoulder, though, not twisting round to look at him. “You know what.”

“Oh. Change.”

“Exactly.”

“Your hair.” What the fuck, Gabe Devlin? What the fuck?

“What? What about it?”

“Your hair is like…” One of his hands twitched and he realised what the problem was. He wanted to touch it. Her. And he had to lean back on his hands to keep them in place. Oh sure, in the kitchen he had…but that was there. This was the bedroom.

She said nothing, turned away again, and the movement made her hair swish against the nearly bare skin of her back. Her skin-tight vest top was cut low at both the front and back, clinging to every curve and in the darkness—the darkness that meant next to nothing to him—her silhouette gave the impression of nudity.

Don’t pull your hair round, don’t pull your hair round—

Cress inclined her head, reached up and gathered her hair into a thick rope which she pulled forward over one shoulder, leaving nothing to distract him from the peep of skin between her vest and shorts, and the curve of her waist.

“So are you going to tell me how you do it?”

It took a split second longer than usual for him to process the words, as if she were speaking a foreign language and he needed a moment to translate. “Oh, the…yeah. Well, we don’t really think about it much. It’s…we control it, but do it without thinking. Like…”

“Riding a bike?”

“Yeah. Riding a bike. At first it takes practice, then it’s second nature.”

“Can you show me?”

“Pardon? You…but earlier, with Fern…? You want me to…?”

“No, I mean on me. Can you show me how to do it?”

This is what I was afraid of. “I don’t know. I’m not sure…”

“Well if I am…you know, like you…it should be easy enough.” And this time she looked over her shoulder right at him. Lifted her eyebrows and asked, “Shouldn’t it?”

“I don’t know if I can…”

“Look.” She sighed and the sound did something to him, but he didn’t dwell on it long enough to articulate the feeling. “You’re always saying if I am…like you…”

“A shape-shifter.”

“Yes, if I am a…” She gulped. “Shape-shifter. Then there’s nothing I can do to alter that, so…let’s find out.
