After the first event, I knew I couldn’t win the Scare Games on my own.

The second challenge, Avoid the Adult, was all about avoiding capture. In the world of real scaring, no Scarer wants to get caught by a kid’s parent. So for this event, each team had to sneak through the Monsters University library and capture their flag while avoiding the librarian.

Earlier that day, I’d coached the team. “From now on, we are of one mind—my mind,” I told them. “I will tell you exactly what to do and how to do it.” I couldn’t risk any of them messing up again.

That night, as the event got under way, we crept single file across the library’s creaky floor and made our way toward the flags. They were hanging from the arm of a statue high up on the second-floor balcony.

We could see the librarian sitting at her desk. She looked like a harmless old monster.

Just then, a floorboard creaked as a student who was studying got up from his seat. The librarian whipped around. Then she rose up—and up and up. She was as tall as the building!

“Quiet!” the librarian growled, holding a finger to her lips. She snatched the poor student in her tentacles and tossed him out of the library through a hole in the domed roof.
