Brian

She’s scared. I could see it in her eyes, in the way she ran to sex when the air became heavy with emotion.

Trista and I have spent countless hours talking about her dad and the ripple effects of his death, and everything that happened with her brother broke her for a long time. I should know. I was the one to help her put the pieces back together.

Not a soul alive understands her wariness of falling in love as much as I do, but I also know she can’t resist the pull anymore, both the insatiable hunger to unite our bodies and the deepening bonds of our friendship and love.

I can tell she feels it too, looking at her as she sleeps next to me, the kind of sleep you can only experience when you feel safe and protected, cherished, and loved. She’s fighting a battle she can’t win, trying to keep her heart out of this sticky mess our friendship is turning into. The only question is how I make her see how good we are together, how perfectly we fit, how we undeniably belong to each other.

You can’t because only you feel it.

That’s not true, I try to shake off the feeling of dread, concentrating on Trista’s calm features instead.

You’re giving her too much power over you, she’ll use it against you, break you.

She wouldn’t. She values our friendship, above all else.

She values fucking you above all else, she lives in the now, remember? Once she’s done using you, she’ll toss you out. No regrets and no looking back.

Jumping out of bed, my heart thumping in my chest, I storm to the shower, turning the water on as hot as I can bear, trying to burn the malicious thoughts away.

I don’t know how long I’m in there, attempting to boil away the panic before Trista comes looking for me.

“B?” she calls from outside the shower. “Please come out.”

“I’m okay,” I call back, trying to control the strain in my voice. There’s silence for a few seconds before the shower door slides open, and Trista, dressed in my t-shirt, extends her hand through the rising steam, handing me a towel.

“Come on.” She coaxes me out and turns the water off as I wrap the towel around my waist. “I have something to show you.”

“Tris…” She turns and puts a finger to my lips to silence me, then crooks it, beckoning me to follow her.

We sit on the bed, and she picks her phone up from the nightstand, clicking on the screen for half a minute before presenting it to me. I look at the email she’s showing me, my brow furrowing in confusion before understanding dawns on me.

“Why?” I ask though I don’t need to. I would have done the same for her.

“Because you need me,” Trista states simply and leans close to me, pressing her forehead to mine.

“That’s a four-hundred dollar round trip from LA to Boston.” I cup her chin and close my eyes. “Just to spend your time watching me mope around on my birthday.
