Chapter Thirteen

“S even a.m.,” Livia called out, while knocking nonstop on Aleesa’s room door.

“Time to rise and shine,” Lena chimed in.

“Okay, okay. I’m up,” Aleesa said, shuffling over to open the door. “I should call hotel security and have you two hoodlums bounced.”

“We’re hitting the road in twenty minutes. Be downstairs or keep your tired self here while we go hang in Carmel,” Lena informed her. “But trust me, there’s a lot going on there that you won’t want to miss—great shopping, a picnic on the beach, art galleries to browse...”

“So get up. We’re going down to the restaurant to have coffee,” Livia said. “See you downstairs.”

Aleesa shut the door and headed back to the bathroom to finish applying her makeup. She was torn about what to do today—take a road trip with her girls or stay at the hotel and sulk about the sorry state of her marriage. San Francisco, with its foggy, overcast sky and chilled morning air, provided the perfect weather for staying in her room with the privacy sign on the door, and having a woe is me fest.

She’d been on the West Coast for three days now, and other than a quick call in the middle of the night to let Walter know she’d arrived safely, she hadn’t spoken to her husband. With the time difference, combined with days and nights spent sightseeing with Livia and satisfying her tourist fix, Aleesa hadn’t had a chance. The two had resorted to brief text messages, which proved to be more about making a courtesy connection than a true marital one. Lena, espousing the absence makes the heart grow fonder theory, thought minimal contact was a good idea, but Aleesa had had enough of both absence and abstinence when it came to her husband.

“Let it go, Lees,” she told herself in the mirror. “The sun is going to eventually come out and burn off all this fog, and then what? Go have fun.”

Thirty minutes later, she was in the car, stretched out in the backseat, singing along with the best of Bay Area natives, Frankie Beverly and Maze. Livia was in the front seat while Lena drove them south on Highway 1, toward the lovely California hot spots of Carmel and Monterey. They drove California-style, with the top down and the heat up, enjoying the scenic coastal route.

“This is probably the most beautiful place I’ve ever been!” Livia shouted through the cool morning breeze so her friends could hear her. “If I wasn’t so afraid of earthquakes, I could live here!”

“Girl, listen to you. You’re scared of dating, scared of sex, and now scared of earthquakes. You are absolutely, without question, the most talented punk I know,” Lena teased her.

“Don’t talk about my cousin like that,” Aleesa threw in, chuckling. “She’s no punk—a chicken shit, maybe, but certainly not a punk!”

“First of all, anybody in their right mind would be afraid of earthquakes,” Livia defended herself. “And if you two weren’t so crazy in lust, you’d be a little bit scared of sex, too.
