CHAPTER SIX
âI AM?â The words were spoken with wonder but filled with hope. As theyâd already admitted an attraction to each other, she shouldnât have been surprised to hear Bart say such wonderful things but the knowledge that he thought she was beautiful filled her with resounding relief as well as quiet confidence.
When Dean had passed away, sheâd often questioned whether or not sheâd be able to feel such intense emotions for another man, and whether another man would ever think she was beautiful, and yet here she was not only trying to control the explosion of fireworks deep within her from his tantalising kiss but delighting in the knowledge he thought she was pretty.
âHow can there be any doubt in your mind? Your eyes are like the deepest emeralds, shining bright with respect for our colleagues, with compassion and caring for your patients and with love for your family. Youâre a survivor, Eb. A strong, independent woman who is captivating me.â
She splayed her fingers wider on his chest,
momentarily enjoying the feel of his firm torso beneath her fingers as she drank in the wonderful words he was saying. The heat
from his body was transmitting itself through her hand before running up her arm, only adding to the fire heâd already lit deep within her.
Ebony gazed up at him, unsure what she was supposed to do or say next because when he spoke to her in such a way, his deep voice resonating throughout every fibre of her being, he turned her mind to complete mush. Instead, she began to slide her hand further up his chest and around his neck, intent on assisting him to lower his head and touch his lips to hers once more. This time, though, she wanted far more than a teasing and tantalising kiss. Her fingers played with the ends of his hair as she eased up slightly onto the balls of her feet, stretching her neck, showing him she was as much affected by all of this as he was.
âEb,â he breathed, his gaze dipping to encompass her parted lips, ready, willing and waiting for him to taste them. This past week, he realised, had been absolute torture on his senses. Not only had he been worried about Timmy but to add his rising emotions for Ebony into the mix and to say he felt as though heâd been living on a roller-coaster was an understatement.
Their breaths began to mingle the closer they came to eliminating all remaining distance between them. Ebony closed her eyes and began adding pressure to the base of his neck, but as Bartâs hand at her waist began to draw her ever nearer, she realised he needed no prompting to give them both what theyâd been yearning for.
Another second and it would happen...but within the next instant Ebony found herself rudely propelled from his embrace. She put both hands out towards the sink to steady herself, completely bewildered and unsure what was happening.
She was about to turn and question Bart when she heard it.
