Chapter Two

LIZZY’S MOUTH DROPPED open in shock. There was also a tingle of something she refused to label as relief or excitement before anger surged to take its place. “How can this be? You are physically so different.”

Fitzwilliam Darcy looked briefly uncomfortable. “The militia hardened me.”

She frowned. “The militia? I do not understand.”

He stood up, clearly realizing she no longer wished to cuddle with him. “After your rejection, I was a wounded animal. I wanted only to run away and hide in my den. I could not, of course, but I needed an escape. I purchased a commission and spent most of the past few years fighting France. Yet, I could not stop thinking about you.”

She scoffed. “You do not expect me to believe my rejection sent you into danger’s path, and you still pine for me?”

He seemed earnest as he ran his fingers through his dark hair. “That is the honest truth, Lizzy.”

She scowled. “You do not know me well enough to use my first name, Mr. Darcy.”

Darcy laughed. “I know you quite well, and even more so now. We have been intimate, Miss Bennet.”

She flushed scarlet at the reminder and hastily jerked the coverlet over her nudity. “That was a mistake. This was all a mistake.” He closed his eyes, and his expression of agony seemed genuine. It bore a striking resemblance to the last time he’d confessed his most painful love for her, making her lips purse. “I cannot believe I fell for your trickery.” She shook her head. “Why did you do this to me, Darcy?”

His eyes opened, and he looked regretful. “I was certain you would not meet with me if you knew who I was.”

She looked away, frowning. “I would have invited you for tea. I owe you some words of thanks for revealing Wickham’s true character. I suppose you must have ceased your campaign to keep my sister and Charles apart as well.”

“I did.” He sighed, making her look back at him. “I did not know if you would even extend such a basic courtesy as to have tea with me, but tea is not what I want. I have loved you for so long, Lizzy. I cannot be without you anymore.”

She frowned. “Does your intolerable love for me still pain you?”

He flinched. “My proposal was clumsy and entirely too honest.”

Lizzy snorted. “Too honest, perhaps, but clearly how you felt. How could I have entertained the idea of marrying you when any affection you felt caused you agony?”

“I made a terrible error in judgment that day at Hunsford, Lizzy. I would undo it if I could. I would change every wretched interaction between us if it were possible, but I cannot. All I can do is prove my love and that I have changed. I am not the man I was then. I have accepted my love, and it has shaped me into the man before you.”

The man before her was certainly a beautiful specimen. His military service had honed his physique and made him almost irresistible.
