In a career spanning seventy years, Frank Belknap Long (1901–1994) produced an immense body of work amounting to hundreds of short stories, poems, and articles, and some twenty-nine novels. A close friend and correspondent of H. P. Lovecraft, this story is acknowledged to be one of the first “Cthulhu Mythos” stories not penned by Lovecraft himself. Appearing first in Weird Tales, March 1929, before its collection seventeen years later in The Hounds of Tindalos (1946), Long’s story invokes Theosophy, Einstein, medieval alchemy and Taoism as a backdrop for a truly terrifying encounter with entities from the fourth dimension.
