CHAPTER FIFTEEN

Temptation

I sat with my back against the trunk of a tree and sipped from a waterskin while I watched Nalithor tear through beast after beast. He had been insistent that he didn’t need my help—that I should rest and let him do all the work—and it stung a little. Nalithor felt responsible for my weakened state and wanted to keep me out of harm’s way. Although I appreciated his concern, I wanted to help anyway. I wasn’t yet satisfied with our hunt.

‘Though I do have a nice view of his ass from up here…’ I tapped one of my feet in the air while examining the Adinvyr below. ‘It’s been at least, what, two hours already? Just how many of the damned things did they send after him?’

The grassy field below me was strewn with corpses and stained with their foul blood. However, Nalithor was all I could bring myself to focus on. His graceful yet deadly movements, the glint of his spear before tearing into a beast’s flesh, and that broad boyish grin that adorned his face. Even though the monstrosities were far too weak to provide the deity with a challenge, it was clear that Nalithor was in his element.

It struck me as strange how they continued to adapt and adopt new strategies against Nalithor. I had never witnessed such intelligent Chaos Beasts before, nor ones that communicated so “openly” with each other. Despite their apparent intelligence, they stood no chance.

‘They haven’t even begun to tire him yet.’ I pursed my lips while looking between the happy Adinvyr and the snarling beasts. ‘I doubt the Exiled Gods would create “useless” creatures, let alone send them after a stronger target. So, what is their real purpose? Are they meant to challenge mortals to grow, or are they there to distract deities from whatever it is the Exiles are up to?’

My eyes snapped back to Nalithor when a gleam of moonslight reflected off his spear. The weapon still had wisps of darkness coiled around it and, every now and then, those wisps reached for me. I had begun to suspect that there was something more to it than his weapon just “liking” me—even the darkness of his aura reached for me on occasion.

I gnawed absentmindedly on the mouth of the waterskin while I watched Nalithor’s unending fight. Even though I found his typical Draemiran attire rather alluring, his armor was also quite a treat. Unlike his usual wardrobe of loose and airy garments, his armor hugged his muscular body like a glove. His current set consisted of leather with plates of armor sewn into strategic locations. It accentuated his long legs and round ass quite nicely.

Of course, his upper half was quite nice too.

‘Hmmm, I quite like his tail as well.’ I decided while examining the glinting veins of platinum amongst his tail’s otherwise obsidian scales. ‘Tch. How much longer until he runs out of beasts? As much as I enjoy the excuse to stare at him…we can’t stay here all day.
