CHAPTER 6

Confessions

After practice, Brie, Jada, Gabby, and I sit on the soft blue carpet of Jada’s bedroom. They all wanted the details on Ella. I’ve just finished recapping our latest run-in for them.

“But wait,” says Jada. “I still don’t get why she picks on you.”

I stare at my hands. I haven’t told them about the Salvation Army store run-in or how I don’t fit in with the girls at my school.

“C’mon,” says Gabby, gently bumping me

with her shoulder, “you can tell us anything.”

I bite my lip. They like me. They’re my friends. “She saw me coming out of the Salvation Army store once,” I say quietly.

No one says anything.

“So . . . what?” Brie finally asks.

“So,” I say, “she knows I shop there. No one at my school would be caught dead there. All the other girls at my school get their nails done, they all have new clothes, you know . . .” My voice trails off.

Gabby throws her hands up in the air. “Are you serious? I get hand-me-downs from my cousins all the time. Who cares?”

How come they don’t see this as a big deal?

Maybe they don’t get it.

“My tap shoes are from Sunny’s Secondhand Shop,” I say quietly. “Most of my stuff is. We can’t really afford new stuff.” I raise my head to look at them.

“That jerk!” cries Jada. “Who cares where you get your clothes or how much money your family has?”
