DINNER WAS NOT HALF as bad as she’d expected as she’d expected. The three of them sat at one end of the large dining table—Dominic at the head, Chantelle on his right and Adele on his other side. The sultan and his harem of two, Chantelle thought with a secret smile as the main course of Roasted Lobster with Verjus and Tarragon was brought in and served.

He was the consummate host, entertaining them with tales of his exploits while at university and funny stories about his countless nieces and nephews. It was clear that he enjoyed being an uncle. And whenever Adele tried to shut Chantelle out with reminiscences of the times she had shared with Dominic, he immediately brought the conversation around to more general matters.

Two weeks ago when curiosity had gotten the better of Chantelle, she had asked Dominic what Adele did for a living. He’d told her that the woman taught first year Law at the Nassau branch of the University of the West Indies. It was an even bigger surprise to discover that the woman had given up her job as a Law professor at Cambridge University for the sunnier Caribbean climate. He’d also said that she had two properties and a large investment portfolio in the UK.

“Rogers, my compliments to Jacques,” Dominic told the butler as the man cast an eagle eye as two of the maids removed the last of the expensive Platinum Wave Noritake china crockery. “The lobster was exceptional.”

“Will do so with great pleasure, sir.”

“Dominic, may I steal you for a few minutes?” Adele batted her eyelids at he rose to pull out Chantelle’s chair.

“Can’t it wait until tomorrow?”

Chantelle was pleased to hear the faintest hint of impatience in his voice.

“I have a meeting with my financial advisor in the morning and I’d like some advice before I see him.” When Dominic looked set to refuse, the woman quickly added, “He sent me a list of proposals that look risky. I’m beginning to think that he doesn’t have my best interest at heart. I really need your advice, Dom.”

“Okay.” He kissed Chantelle’s cheek and whispered with a treat of promised delight, “Go on up, sweetheart. I’ll be there shortly.”

“Good night, Adele.” Chantelle kept her voice sweet and even, but she couldn’t help but feel that the woman had won this round of their battle.

“Good night, my dear.”

My dear. It wasn’t meant as a term of endearment—the woman seemed bent on reminding Chantelle that she was older, wiser and more sexually adept.
