Chapter Eleven

“You’ve had sex.”

Aria looked up to see Lidia waiting for her by her car. It was lunchtime and Grant had already texted her that he was having to deal with the dogs at the shelter.

“What are you doing here?” Aria asked.

It was cold. Snow had fallen. Ernie and Bruno were inside the vet’s keeping warm. Phil and Andy had given her their lunch order and she was about to go and get it.

“First, you’re my best friend and hanging out with you on your lunch break is a given. I’ve been doing it for years, Aria. Have you forgotten? Second, I heard about what that fucking piece of crap did, and I wanted to come and see you.”

“Ah, Sean,” Aria said.

“No, dickwad, evil bastard. Those are acceptable names.”

“He’s called Sean, and if I remember correctly, you thought he was ‘the one’ at one point.”

Lidia wrinkled her nose. “No, I never did. Trust me, he was never the one. He was a piece of crap. I just didn’t realize how much of a piece of crap he was.” Lidia stepped toward her. “He nearly cost me my best friend. I can’t stand him. It’s as simple as that.”

Aria smiled. “You’d have found other friends.”

Lidia shook her head. “I hate it when you do that. It makes me hate your mother so much. You always think you can be easily replaced and you can’t. No one will ever be as good as my Aria. Besides, Sean’s a guy. He will not come in the way of our relationship. Now tell me, was it the MC guy?”

She laughed and then looked toward the vet’s. “I’ve got to go and get lunch.”

“Then I’ll ride with you. Ass-face has already cost us so much time. I’m not going to let him steal another minute.”

Before Halloween night, she and Lidia had spent a great deal of time together, including lunch breaks. Sean was the first guy to have ever gotten between them, and Aria knew it was her fault. She had believed his lies, and that was all on her, not Lidia.

Lidia climbed into the passenger seat of Aria’s car and hummed to herself as she put on the seat belt.

“So, MC guy. Is he hot in bed?”

“Lidia, come on, I’m not going to tell you that.”

“Why not?” Lidia asked. “You didn’t have sex until now, and don’t even pretend you did, we both know you didn’t. This is a big deal. You had sex with a guy and not just any guy, but Grant Reynolds.”

“Why does that matter?” Aria asked.

“You do know that Grant has a reputation around town, right?” Lidia asked.

“Yeah, I know.” She cringed just thinking about it.

“Do you?”

She turned to Lidia and then looked ahead of her as she pulled out of the parking lot. “Yeah, I know. I know he’s been around. A lot of women have used him or whatever.”

“He’s flighty,” Lidia said. “From what I heard, he bangs and runs.”

“What?”

“Grant is never there for round two, nor is he there long enough to say if it’s good enough.
