It was the early hours of the morning before Brenda managed to fall into a light, restless sleep. The clock radio woke her very early, and she groaned as she rolled over to turn it off. Sheâd only put it on because she had wanted to talk to Blake, but how was she going to face him now?
She still wasnât sure just what had come over her the night before. After many sleepless hours, the only thing she had decided was that it had been too long since a man had kissed her or shown any real interest in her as a woman. She had gone out with Robert several times before he had ventured any more than a light good-night kiss. And even after they had been engaged for several months, never had his touch possessed and inflamed her as Blakeâs had.
Perhaps that had been because Robert knew her views about not consummating their love before their marriage vows had been spoken before God, she tried to convince herself. Deep down, she was afraid that if Blake had continued to kiss her, she would have found it much harder to stop him.
âJust shows I can never be complacent about that particular temptation,â she whispered grimly.
Resolutely she swung her legs over the side of the bed and stretched out for her housecoat. She glanced down at her leg. This would have stopped him if he had seen it, she thought bitterly. Perhaps it was time she told him. And if that did stop him? She shrugged off that possibility with a saddened heart.
She showered and dressed, hesitating over the outfits she had brought with her. Because she had only worn well-fitting jeans instead of slacks before the accident, her choice of clothes was now very limited.
Jack had wanted to give her money, but lovingly she had refused because she knew how hard he and Cathy had been saving to buy their own home before they married. Brenda had managed with her Social Security benefits to buy a few economical, full-length caftans and loose fitting slacks, which she had accepted as necessary but still did not like. Her only extravagance had been the pair of cream culottes in a soft polyester that she had been wearing for her job interviews the day she had met Blake. Now she discarded the other clothes and put on the culottes. They at least were looser than the slacks and the rich golden brown blouse she teamed with them matched some of the highlights in her hair. Her hand was slightly unsteady as she applied eye makeup to try and disguise the shadows from the restless night.
It was well after seven oâclock when she at last ventured out to the kitchen. She gave a sigh of relief that no one else was there. At least a cup of coffee might revive her enough to be able to face Blake.
Who are you kidding? she thought. Nothing will make that easier.
She was setting the table for breakfast while the electric kettle heated for her coffee when Rick wandered in.
