WARRIOR WOMAN

“Broken girls blossom into warriors.”

-Anon.

CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

I picked her up out of my truck and carried her into the huge open floor plan of my place. Every time I walked through the front door, I appreciated the twenty-foot-high ceiling with immense wooden beams spanning its surface. I could imagine the town’s firefighters of yore walking beneath them. The exposed brick on the walls gave the dwelling a warm, welcoming atmosphere, and I realized, now with Mia back, it truly felt like home.

I placed her arms around my shoulders before settling my good hand under her bottom and Captain Hook on the back of her neck. It was how a person might carry a child, but the blaze coursing through her skin felt like full-grown female beneath my palm.

I set her on the couch and gazed into her eyes. “I’m thinking it’s a comfort food kind of day. What do you say to ordering pizza and watching movies so you can relax?“

“Sounds wonderful. Are you sure I’m not being a bother? You didn’t plan on having me as your overnight guest.”

“You’re not a guest here, Mia. Think of this as your home.“

She expelled a long, shaky sigh and sank against my chest, allowing me the pleasure of stroking her hair and inhaling the scent that arose as I did so. She smelled like every great moment I’d ever had.

Finding Mia hopeless in the hospital room strengthened my conviction she needed me as her Daddy Dom to whisk all of her worries away. As her protector, I would remain uncompromising and fierce against any threat to her health or safety and unrelenting in my discipline and affection for her.

It took all of my willpower to rein in the primal anger I felt at seeing her chest covered by the circular sticky tabs of the EKG. I realized when it came to Mia, the slightest hint of danger made me like a savage beast hell-bent on destroying anything that so much as blinked in her direction. That went doubly for whatever or whomever caused her PTSD, and I would seek them out.

“Sweet pea, what sent you to the hospital today?”

She pulled her pretty head back and shoved her tiny shoulders forward. “I had a panic attack.” She paused and took a shuddery breath. “Coming to town made me remember something I’ve been trying to forget. I’m not ready to talk about it, but I will someday, okay, Daddy?”

It was as if Mia had become my whole world in the span of weeks, and we hadn’t even spent much time with each other. I knew without question she was meant to be mine in a way I had never experienced with another girl. I felt it in my bones and my gut; she fit me perfectly.

I ran a hand from the back of her neck, down her back, and up again, finally caressing the plump lips of her mouth.

“Are you Daddy’s precious girl?”

She slowly nodded her affirmation.

“You know what that means, princess?”

“Not exactly? But I wanna find out.
