Chapter Four

Carrie

L ucas saw me off from work in the evening. It was about an hour before Mom arrived. I let him inside the house, and that rarely happened. Not to mention how scared I was that Daddy might get mad if he saw Lucas.

I didn't like Lucas as much as I liked Daddy. Lucas never made me feel.

Just like I thought, Daddy didn't look pleased as I walked in, and Lucas followed behind me, eager to make a good impression as he had been complaining about being nervous since we had begun the walk home.

"Good evening, Da-" my voice trailed off as I corrected myself and said his name instead. Lucas did the same, and Daddy hummed a response, a question on his face as he looked at me with a raised brow.

I was scared I might piss Daddy off. I needed to make it up to him soon.

"How was your first day?" he finally asked after a small moment, and I shot up, happy that he was talking to me.

"Normal, boring as every other restaurant," I responded casually. "It was a little fun, though."

"Hm-hm," Daddy nodded and returned to the kitchen with the mug in his hands and a towel hanging over his shoulder. I loved that he worked from home. It allowed me to spend more time with him.

I felt Lucas's light tap on my shoulder and realized I'd been staring at Daddy, all the while forgetting I had my boyfriend next to me. I darted my gaze back to Lucas and faked a smile. "Hey…"

With his gaze lingering on Daddy, Lucas's expression was contorted. "I don't think he likes me very much," he said slowly, and my heart ached a little for him.

Everybody wanted to be liked by Daddy. It was only right to be liked by him. I patted his shoulder lightly, consoling him. "He's indifferent to everyone, honestly. That's just the way he is."

Deep inside my mind, I was happy that Daddy wasn't indifferent to me. He loved me and did things to me— something he'd never do to just anyone, even Mom. Daddy told me that himself.

"Can we go up to your room instead?" Lucas asked, and before he could finish up his request, I had already begun to see a fault in it.

"Why…?"

"Because I don't feel comfortable here. I don't know why…and I really, really want to spend time with you, Carrie."

I wanted to remind Lucas that we'd spent fifteen minutes together walking home, and it's been three minutes since we'd arrived. Why wasn't that enough time for him?

The sad expression remained plastered on his face. I pitied him more than I liked him. Feeling obligated to, I nodded and told him it was okay, even though I was lying.

I got up and led him upstairs, meeting Daddy by the staircase.

"You're going upstairs?" Daddy queried with a hint of doubt in his voice, and I felt my stomach tighten.

"For a while," I responded, fighting the urge to explain to him that nothing would happen between us.
