There were plenty of women I could have without bribing them with Italian desserts and good head. But I didn’t want plenty of women.

I wanted only one.

I thought I had it down on lock.

Jessica had a heightened color to her skin.

There was no other way to describe it. The blush on her pale cheeks was like the flush of sunset on snow.

Over time, the lies we tell ourselves disguise themselves as truth. The way she looked at me, tenderly, at others her eyes sparkling as if I was one giant game to her, it made me believe I deserved her. That if I treated her just right, maybe I’d earn forgiveness for all I’d done in my life.

But those pipe dreams were finished after work one evening. I strolled over to the cottage where she insisted on staying, and Jessica served me a cup of tea while gritting her teeth. Something was bothering her, that was for sure, but she still had good manners, seating me in the living room and offering a plate of cookies while she fumed.

I admired that.

“Are you going to tell me what’s bothering you today?” I asked.

Her tongue was heavy with sarcasm. “Don’t act so innocent. I know you’re still a mobster. Your side chick, Jolene, showed me proof.” Her annoyance seemed to increase at the sight of her own hands shaking as she spoke, “I believe her exact words were, ‘If Lorenzo’s no longer a gangster, then I’m still a virgin.’”

She emptied a packet of fake sugar into a mug, pinging the spoon off its sides as if to stir away her simmering anger.

“Here.” She slid her cell phone across the coffee table towards me, like an accusation. “See for yourself.”

Pushing play, the screen filled with a shot of the back parking lot at the Diamante, and I recognized Enzo, who was kicking the shit out of a patron who’d attempted to cheat at the Blackjack table and was now regretting it very much.

A stab of guilt lay buried in my chest as I watched myself walk onto the screen and throw the low life’s now empty wallet at his head. “What’s that supposed to prove?” I asked her.

“It proves you’re the worst, pretending to be an honest man. For what? Why did you lie to me? You're no better than he is!” She looked bereft and desolate and I felt like a million kinds of low.

I moved closer to her on the couch. A terrible regret assailed me, but again, I was too selfish to fess up. The only way to keep her safe, at my side, was to follow through with the lie I’d already started. “Look, kitten. Sometimes we have to deal with a shadier side of society at the Casino. That doesn’t make me a gangster. It makes me a businessman protecting his assets.” I pulled her to me, but she twisted in my arms and arched her body as she sought to get free. “Please don’t shut me out, J.
