FRANK AND RUTH LANGFORD were wonderful hosts, Alex decided with a sigh. They’d treated her like family, and she’d relaxed. She and Frank talked vehicles when he heard she was going shopping for one in the morning. He even recommended several places to go.

Ruth asked about the movies they’d seen in Dallas. Cactus had a movie theater, but the movies were never first-runs. They had to go into Lubbock for that.

When Alex asked her about a recipe, she offered to copy it down for her. They even discussed Tuck’s kitchen and the revamping he planned.

“I called the contractor to come out tomorrow,” Tuck added, “but it’s a good thing he couldn’t make it. Is your schedule already filled for Thursday? That’s when he said he could meet with me.”

She ignored the tinge of sarcasm to his words. “You want me to be there for the meeting? I thought I was only going to pick out wallpaper, things like that.”

“I need you there. He’s going to bring along some pictures, some ideas.”

“Oh, that sounds like fun,” she agreed. And it did. She’d enjoy looking at the possibilities. “Yes, I can make it.”

“Good. He’s coming at eight.”

She winced. “I should’ve asked the time before I agreed.”

“I’ll reschedule it.”

“Don’t be silly. I can get up early.”

“But you need your rest. The doc said—”

“A doctor?” Ruth asked with concern. “Are you sick?”

“The doctor who treated me for amnesia said I needed to rest and relax.” She shot Tuck a warning glance. “But I can take a nap after the meeting. It’ll be fine.”

“Ralph must be doing a lot of business if he can’t come until Thursday,” Frank commented.

Alex was grateful for the distraction.

“It’s spring. A lot of people put off work until after winter,” Tuck said.

The conversation continued on, but Alex said little. She would be glad when everyone announced the pregnancies. She didn’t think they would be able to keep it a secret much longer.

After warm goodbye hugs from Frank and Ruth, she got back in Tuck’s truck for the ride to the condo. “What have you told your parents about us?” she asked.

“Why?”

“They treated me like family.”

“And you’re objecting?”

“Of course not!” she protested. “I loved it. But I didn’t want them to have expectations that...that I can’t fulfill.”

“I told them you refused to marry me.”

“Then why were they so nice to me?”

“Because they don’t expect me to give up.”

She stared at him as he calmly continued to drive. “Tuck, we live three hundred miles apart. We hardly know each other.” She swallowed before she added, “I just don’t see how things are going to work out.”

“I believe they will. And in the meantime, we can spend time together. We already know we’re sexually compatible.”

“You know that. I don’t.”

“I’m willing to prove it anytime you want,” he assured her with a sexy grin. “Though, I’d think the kisses we’ve shared would be enough to tell you there’s a spark between us that might set off a forest fire.”

She thought so, too. But she didn’t want to tell him that.
