On the Phone with Chief at Judy’s Place

May 17, 1990

Things have settled down quite a bit. None of us has laughed uncontrollably for at least five minutes, and the giggles, chuckles, and hiccups are tapering off, too. This next call won’t be as easy, or as comical.

Chief knows Hammer well enough to spot a total bullshit story, so I’ll have to make him believe whatever yarn I spin. It will need to mesh with the one I told him the other day about how I came into possession of the S&S property. Luckily, Kenneth and I made notes be-fore I called Chief the first time, so I have some idea of where to go from there.

I dig out my list of phone numbers and call Chief’s house, figuring I’ll get Polly, if anyone. She picks up the phone and says, “Hello,” just like last time.

“Polly, this is your pigtail-pullin’ buddy from up north,” I tell her, and I hear her breath quicken just a little.

“The big man is wantin’ to talk to you right away,” she says. “He’s been kinda cranky since the last time you two talked.” I can only imagine.

“That’s why I called. I’ll call him at that number I used last time, unless you think somewhere else would be better.”

I figure it can’t hurt to be conciliatory at this stage. There will be plenty of time to be an asshole later.

“No,” she starts, “that’ll be fine. You still have that number?” I tell her I do. “Okay, give him about thirty minutes. I’ll need to go talk to him in person. Just don’t fuckin’ make him any madder, will ya?”

“What I’ve got to tell him should make him happy,” I say, and almost mean it. “Things have been weird. I’ll call him at one o’clock. Take care, Polly.” And I’m gone.
