Chapter 33
Monday
Essex
The JetRanger touched down with the gentlest of bumps just eleven minutes after Wilson had turned the aircraft north-east about a mile beyond the Isle of Dogs. He hadnât even had to search for a landing ground, because as the helicopter approached the coordinates south of Toot Hill, he saw an almost level field right in front of him, at one end of which was a collection of police vehicles.
âA bunch of bad news and breathalysers right there,â Wilson said as he started the engine shutdown procedure. âHopefully theyâre on your side, but if it all turns to rat-shit and you need to make a quick getaway, Iâll be right here.â
âI hope theyâre on our side too,â Angela Evans said, âbut thanks for the offer.â
She and Morgan unclipped their seat belts and climbed down from the aircraft as soon as the rotors had stopped turning and the engine had shut down.
The closest police vehicles â cars and vans â were about two hundred yards away, parked in a straggly line along the edge of the lane that bordered the field where the JetRanger had landed, and a couple of men, both clad in normal uniform and peaked caps rather than the tactical clothing most of the other officers were wearing, approached them.
âAnd who are you two, exactly?â the leading police officer asked. He was a tall and excessively thin man, with sharp features and dark, almost black, eyes. He was a superintendent and he looked irritated, perhaps with life in general, but certainly with them in particular.
âMy name is Ben Morgan and this is Angela Evans. Weâve come from the Home Office and weâre here as observers. You should have been told to expect us. And who are you, exactly?â he finished, turning the manâs question around.
âSuperintendent Crenshaw. Iâm the ground commander for this operation. That means you do what I tell you, and what Iâm telling you to do is keep well out of my way and out of the way of my men as they do their jobs.â He punctuated his remarks with a jabbing forefinger.
âAnd good afternoon to you too, Superintendent,â Evans snapped. âWe havenât come here to get shot at, so you neednât worry about us getting too close. And you can lose the attitude unless you want me to have a quick chat with your chief constable.â
Crenshaw seemed a little taken aback by the response and looked slightly uncertainly at Morgan, who grinned at him.
âMiss Evans sometimes functions as my personal attack dog,â he said, âand if you annoy her youâll very quickly discover that her bite is very much worse than her bark. So whatâs the situation here? Whatâs your evidence and what do you know about the occupants and the target property?â
Superintendent Crenshaw switched his gaze back to Angela, who responded with a dazzling smile.
âWell,â he said, almost hesitantly, âwe had a tip-off, an anonymous call, from somebody whoâd seen the news about the kidnapping of this man Michaelson, and claimed heâd seen two men dragging a third person into the farmhouse thatâs the other side of those trees.
