Chapter 13

Mel leaned against the wall, arms crossed over her broad shoulders, as she watched her wife Dana pacing back and forth on the worn carpet in front of the mismatched chairs in the waiting area of the Gatlinburg Police Station. Marco, Dana's father, sat nearby, idly flipping through an outdated magazine.

"Mel, do you think they'll listen to us?" Dana asked, stopping her pacing to glance at her wife.

"Let's hope so," Mel replied with a furrowed brow. "We need to make sure they know Devon isn't responsible for what happened to Slater."

Marco grunted in agreement, tossing the magazine onto a side table. "And we've got other suspects to consider too. Wesley being one of them."

As if on cue, the door to the station swung open and Wesley Collins strolled in, his face a mix of annoyance and worry. He didn't seem to notice Mel, Marco, and Dana as he approached the front desk.

"Crane, Rossi, Rossi-Crane," called out a uniformed officer from a nearby doorway. "They're ready for your statements."

The trio exchanged a quick glance before rising from their seats and following the officer toward the interview rooms, leaving Wesley behind in the waiting area.

"Could be our break," Marco whispered as they walked down the hallway, his eyes narrowing. "If Wesley slips up during questioning, it might lead us to the real killer."

Mel nodded, her mind racing with possibilities. What would they learn about the case? And how could they use that information to bring justice to those affected by the murders?

In the interview room, the gray walls seemed to close in around them. A plain table and a few chairs were the only furnishings. They settled into their seats, awaiting the detectives' arrival. Each carried their own suspicions and theories about the case, but they were united in their determination to uncover the truth.

As the door opened and two detectives entered the room, Mel took a deep breath, bracing herself for the questions that would follow. She knew the stakes were high and that every detail mattered.

"Good afternoon, I'm Detective Reynolds, and this is my partner, Detective Thompson," said one detective, a tall woman with a stern expression. "We'll be taking your statements about what happened tonight and anything else you three would like to share about our ongoing cases."

Mel recognized them both. The short, stocky man with graying hair, Thompson, had been the one to question Cole earlier that day.

"Sure thing, detective," Marco replied, nodding to both Reynolds and to Thompson. "Before we begin," Marco interjected, his voice firm yet steady, "I just want to clarify that Devon has been wrongly accused. He's a good man and had nothing to do with Slater's murder. I was standing right beside him the night that happened, watching him at his board, turning on all of those animatronics. First off, I don't think what he was doing shut the lights down in the haunt, and second, he never moved from his spot."

"Mr. Rossi, we understand your concern, but we're following all leads," Detective Thompson responded, his tone neutral.
