âYEAH, OKAY. IF HE checks in, tell him to call me, okay?â Sean put his hand over the phone, sliding his gaze around to get a bead on Abraâs whereabouts. Since sheâd expressly told him not to do this, he thought it was better if she didnât overhear.
Come on. He was a big boy. He got to decide whether he wanted to risk aiding and abetting a fugitive, didnât he? What could it hurt just to verify that she wasnât on Americaâs Most Wanted at the post office?
So heâd sneaked out to the screen porch to put in a quick call to his brother Jake, who was unfortunately still not back at the office or at home or answering his cell phone. Even Cooper, second choice at best, was also unavailable. Probably at the fishing cabin, out of signal range.
Damn it. How was a guy supposed to run a discreet check on the official response to Abraâs absence if he couldnât get through to anyone he could count on not to ask questions?
Maybe Bill would be okay. He was a pal, another detective whoâd come up about the same time. It wasnât like family, but Sean figured he could trust him. And at least he was in the office.
âHey, Bill. Itâs Sean,â he said, keeping his voice casual and unconcerned. âListen, Iâm out of town and I wondered if you could check on something for me. Just between us, okay?â
Billâs voice came booming over the wire. âI thought you were gone fishinâ with the bros. What happened? Somebody stealing your trout and you need some backup to take âem down?â
âFunny. No. The fishing trip didnât happen. Something else came up. Something personal.â
âThat sounds interesting. I didnât know you had a personal life, Sean.â He chuckled. âSo what do you need? Background check to see if your hot new girlfriend has a solicitation record?â
âNah. No hot new girlfriend,â he said quickly. âSorry to disappoint you. Nothing important, really. Justâ¦â Adding a sheepish tone to his voice, he improvised, âMy mom is a big fan of that TV star, Abra Holloway, and she was dying to know if there was anything new on her vanishing act. You know my ma.â
âYeah. We all know your ma,â Bill noted gruffly. âShe tried to fix me up with one of your cousins at the mayorâs picnic last summer. Jeez. You have my sympathies, pal.â
âSo you understand my problem.â Sean found a laugh of his own. âShe wants something, she doesnât give up. Anyway, she wanted me to find out about this Holloway disappearance, and I told her I would. So, anything come in on Abra Holloway? APB, maybe? Any kind of search going?â
âAbra Holloway,â Bill mumbled. âOkay, I wrote myself a note. Havenât seen anything. Let me check and get back to you.â
âGood enough.â He paused. He shouldnât be doing this, but he had this gut instinct⦠âOh, and Bill? Anything else you can find on her, let me know, okay? Anything at all. But keep it on the down-low.
