Chapter Seven

As soon as dusk fell, Rhett knocked at my door. My heart kick-started as I crossed the tiny RV to answer it. Nervous butterflies broke out in the pit of my stomach. Not only was I nervous because this felt like an actual date—I was also nervous because I had yet to tell Rhett I’d invited the others tonight. I hoped Billie was right about him not minding if they came.

When I swung the door open, Rhett stood at the bottom of the steps dressed in a dark teal t-shirt and a pair of black cargo shorts. His t-shirt was tight-fitting and allowed me to see his muscular physique. I licked my lips, liking what I saw, and my bear let out a low rumble of agreement.

I would have to rein her in.

“Hey,” Rhett said. He flashed me an adorable smile and rubbed his hands together rapidly, looking like a kid excited about opening a present. “Ready for this?”

My teeth sank into my bottom lip. The gesture caused the smile on his face to fall and disappointment splashed through his eyes.

I shifted on my feet. “About that. I invited Liam and Tris, as well as Penny and Rafe, to come with us. I know I should’ve said something to you about it sooner. Heck, I probably should’ve asked before I invited them, but it just happened. I went to the pool with Penny and Tris earlier today, and while we were talking, I told them about tonight. Tris seemed upset I was getting to go on this tour when Liam hadn’t taken her yet. Apparently, he promised her he would a while ago but they haven’t had time for whatever reason. If you don’t want them to come, I completely understand, but I also don’t know how to tell them no on such short notice. They’re supposed to meet us at the mine.” The words fell from my lips in a rush as soon as I opened my mouth. I clamped my lips shut and continued holding Rhett’s stare, waiting for him to say something. When he didn’t, knots formed in the pit of my stomach. “I’ll make it up to you somehow if you’re upset.”

Rhett climbed the few steps Sapphire had and grabbed my hands, interlacing his fingers through mine. The same electricity that always sparked between us when we touched traveled along my skin. His adorable grin stretched wide, and he chuckled.

“Calm down. I’m not upset. It’s fine. Really. I don’t mind them coming along. I’m actually glad they’re coming,” he insisted.

“Really? Why?”

“Because I like that you’re getting to know everyone, and that you’re forming friendships with Tris and Penny. It gives you another reason to stay.” His eyes darkened, becoming filled with an emotion I couldn’t name. “Especially if I’m not reason enough.”

His words hit me like ice water.

“You are reason enough,” I said without hesitation.

A playful look entered his stare. “You think so, huh?”

There was a level of confidence oozing from him I found sexy. My breath caught in my throat because of it.
