SCENE 2

That afternoon I felt like one of those racehorses you see on telly that’s too shocked about the starting barriers coming away to run, and so it just stands there and kind of horsey marches on the spot in a bit of a panic.

My body felt jittery, my brain had become a sluggish cloud of real-life fanfiction and meanwhile my friends had an afternoon that was an IG dream.

A dream I watched on my phone.

It looked like Teddy and Robin made it to the church fête sooner rather than later and weren’t shy about joining in the activities.

Teddy even bought a raffle ticket which hilariously had the number 666. So, of course, he and Robin sneaked into the church and positioned it in all sorts of places, including the statue of the Virgin Mary were the unspeakable had happened and the memory of which made me physically melt to the floor temporarily.

Forgive me, Teddy, for I have sinned, I thought, but was literally salivating at the thought of Katherine and the way I could still feel her breasts push against mine through our clothing.

She was in a couple of the story posts, too.

In one, she had her arms around Teddy and Robin, and Teddy wrote: Love spending time with my pals.

Because I had nothing to do and nowhere to be, and because I’d already been awake and in my bedroom all night, I finally decided to go downstairs again, where the back door was wide open.

Dad had returned after his hissy fit about ‘The Lark Ascending’, and he was in the garden inspecting the fence.

Mum stood a few metres back, arms crossed, and talking.

Grandad was playing the piano, and Rachmaninoff was asleep on the bench next to him.

‘What are you playing?’ I asked Grandad.

‘Camelot.’

‘What’s Camelot?’

‘The musical is called Camelot. Charles is singing one of the numbers from it in the show. It’s magnificent. Julie Andrews, Richard Burton and Robert Goulet were in it when it was on Broadway.’

‘Goulet is a weird name.’

‘Oh, everyone was in love with Robert Goulet.’

‘What’s the show about?’ I asked

He looked at me. ‘Camelot.’

I looked at him.

‘King Arthur, Tilly. Honestly, what do you talk about at school all day?’ he asked. He plinkety-plonked the intro on the piano again, and then he sang the whole song for me, and I learned that Grandad had a really lovely voice.

I hummed along and googled Camelot on my phone, and yes, of course I knew the story of King Arthur, but I don’t think I ever quite knew just how much his wife was into her knight. Or how much he was into her. As in, he was literally inside her regularly, which lead me to the unsurprising conclusion that they don’t ever teach you the good stuff at school which really is a shame. Because if I’d known about Guenevere having a hot affair with a man who wasn’t her husband, which was obviously a complete scandal, but that her husband may or may not have also had the hots for him, I may have been a bit more invested in the legend.
