CHAPTER 6

***

Hailey

I pull back the covers and sneak out of bed on tiptoe. I trip on my way to the doorway and slap a hand over my mouth, hopping around on one foot. Something snaps underfoot, and my heart sinks. I glance over my shoulder where Adrian lies sleeping.

Please don’t wake up.

I scoop whatever I’ve broken from the floor as my eyes orient to the darkness. I’m unfamiliar with the layout of Adrian’s bedroom. I saw so little of it with the lights on. I feel my way through the room, careful not to step on anything else.

I grab Adrian’s sweatpants and my dress from the living room floor and tiptoe toward the bathroom in search of my shoes. It takes a hot minute to remember they were the tipping point for last night’s first round of mind-blowing super “Os.” My body’s never been lavished with as much care and tenderness as Adrian showed me. I’ve never felt more loved–

It isn’t love. It’s no strings, no expectations.

I can’t risk retrieving my shoes from his bedroom. If he rouses, I’ll never want to leave. I’ll never make it to work. It would make it that much harder to make a clean getaway. I make it to the bathroom quiet as a mouse and close the door behind me. I set the broken item on the counter and cringe when I catch a glimpse of myself in the mirror. Mascara smudges the fragile skin below my eyes, and the only lipstick left from last night leaves a clownish smear of red from my nose to my chin.

I’m far from badass. I’m a freakin’ raccoon.

I quickly pull on Adrian’s sweatpants, ignoring the soreness between my thighs. He’s a freakin’ god in bed. I thought teenage boys were the only ones with that kind of stamina. Not grown men with experience under their belt. And geez, is he knowledgeable. The things he can do with his tongue and fingers and his ginormous... He’s gifted in more ways than one. And I’m screwed if I don’t get out of here.

Getting caught up in repeat “Os” and visits to Adrian’s bed could mean serious damage to my heart. I’m too naive, too impatient, too trusting, too impulsive–

Too much and not enough.

I rummage through his clothes hamper for a shirt that isn’t too dirty. It only needs to get me from his door to mine. I pull a tee overhead and tighten the drawstring on Adrian’s pants to keep them from falling off my hips. That’s when I notice what’s lying on the countertop. A broken handmade ornament.

I did that. Crushed a childhood memory. Literally.

My heart plummets as I inspect the splintered popsicle sticks. The ornament is signed with a heart, an age, and Adrian’s name. I’ve ruined a beautifully perfect item from his Christmas memory arsenal. He probably put his heart and soul into making it. The ornament means something to him, or he wouldn’t have kept it, and it wouldn’t be lying around in his bedroom.
