The Licensing of America
A century ago, very few occupations required licensing. Doctors, lawyers, and accountants learned their trades through apprenticeships. Today, those who want to go into these reliably lucrative fields need years of postgraduate training. Even many service occupations, such as beautician, electrician, and plumber, have training requirements that restrict membership.
Until World War II, many successful businessmen had little schooling; now most prospective managers need college degrees, and those with an MBA (Master of Business Administration) are most in demand. A degree from one of the prestigious schools commands a high starting salary. Teachers and social workers, besides acquiring a bachelorâs degree (conferred on completing the undergraduate course) must submit to specialised training.
Because of the length of training and expense for a particular career, there are not as many open doors in America as there once were, and many people of talent are limited in their pursuits. However, those who know what they want to do can probably find a way to get the necessary degree.
