Lesson Ideas
Science instruction is perhaps the most traditional use of the garden classroom. Lessons focus on a variety of objectives including animal habitats, weather concepts, physical properties of matter, needs of plants and the plant cycle, rocks and minerals, water cycle, animal life cycle, plant adaptations, animal adaptations, the food pyramid, ecosystems, and recycling, just to name a few. However, the learning garden should also be used as a space to practice literacy and language instruction.
A sampling of lesson ideas across grade levels and content areas that are enriched by a garden setting follow. These lessons can be expanded into full, garden-based unit plans, or used as mini-lessons to integrate learning gardens into already established traditional classroom lessons.
Common Core math and literacy standards are found with each lesson, but these lessons also align with multiple statesâ Science, English Language Arts, and Social Studies Standards as well. Adaptability suggestions are provided, as flexibility is essential when working with linguistically diverse students. All lessons are designed to encourage language production and literacy skills in English learners through authentic reading, writing, speaking, and listening activities.
