Chapter 22

I slept about as well as I expected, going over the mysterious black-clad woman’s words. Wasn’t it hard enough being a combat Culinomancer without some shadowy entity with near limitless resources putting a bounty on my head equivalent to that of a mass murderer? And why? What threat was I to anyone? Had there been some secret uprising of Culinomancers in the past that people feared a repeat of? I doubted it. People mocked Culinomancers as the lowest school of magic, but hating enough for this?

Could it be personal instead? Someone I’d made hate me enough for this. I couldn’t think of anyone. There might have been a couple of broken hearts in my wake, but nobody from families with these kinds of resources. I’d killed that Axumite guy by accident in the exam, but even Shiba seemed to not be too fussed about that now. Apart from maybe helping Nathalie unintentionally to commit her murders, I’d done nothing to earn that level of hate I could think of.

The only possible contender I could see with the power was Jang’s father. He had wanted Jang to end her contract with me, but it sounded like that was more pragmatic than anything. Besides, I’d not seen much of Jang for six weeks and tried my best not to think of her having sex with other men. Why would he keep the hit on me when we’d played by the rules? Otherwise, Nathalie herself was the only one who could hold a grudge, but the black-clad woman had at least implied that Nathalie was the reason she was helping me.

I sighed. Not enough information. As the sun peeked in through the windows, I gave up on trying to get any more sleep. Instead, I went down for my customary depressing breakfast.

Today was Wednesday, so familiar training was my morning session. My badger was growing along nicely and definitely could not fit on my shoulder anymore. Little Becheur now walked alongside me, although I could tell she missed her shoulder perch. Despite being nocturnal by nature, she seemed to have adapted well to life by my side and came along with me most places. I’d never considered myself a familiar trainer, but things were going pretty well there, I had to admit. From her growth rate, I expected she’d end up pretty large and could be useful in a fight or for scouting.

The dining hall was pretty full, and groups were chattering excitedly. As I picked up my tough black bread and scrambled eggs for the morning, I could overhear conversations about there being a surge of activity among the university’s support workers and something big was clearly afoot. I smiled to myself, knowing that this was likely what the woman in black had speculated. The field trip was coming early this year.

Despite the circumstances, this had me excited. The field trip was our first chance to actually show our potential as real world wizards. We’d be in an actual war zone, often the border with the Roman Empire that ever shifted east and west.
