CHAPTER 13

BRAD DID HIS best to keep any annoyance or irritation out of his voice as he talked with Michael on the phone. Michael had asked to borrow Laura’s cell to call his dad. The echo on his son’s end indicated that Michael was in the bathroom.

“It was just a bad dream buddy. Everything is fine and everyone is fine. Your sister is at a friend’s house and your mom, and I are watching tv here at home.”

Michael was talking too fast for Brad to understand the words but the meaning behind it was clear. He wanted to come home. It was a little past midnight.

“Why don’t you try laying back down? You’ll be alright pal.”

Michelle had to give Brad credit. He was really trying to convince Michael to stay but after another five minutes of failed bartering, Brad gave in.

“Okay bud. I’ll be over there soon.”

Keys in hand, Brad headed out the door to pick up his son at twelve thirty in the morning. He couldn’t remember the last time they’d had a night alone. “One day, maybe one day,” he mumbled as he started the car.

Michelle shut the door and headed to the kitchen to get some water. Not staying the night at his friend’s house was a common struggle that didn’t seem to be going away anytime soon. All parents deal with this situation at some point in their child’s life. Brad and Michelle thought encouraging him to do it would eventually allow Michael to overcome this hurdle.

Opening the pantry revealed three packs of hot chocolate left. Hot chocolate with a few marshmallows would be soothing and hopefully calm him down before he went to bed. That’s when she heard the distinct sound of a door closing upstairs. They weren’t dog or cat people so there weren’t a whole lot of reasons for why a door would shut when she was supposedly alone in their house.

Leaving the two mugs on the counter, she headed to the stairs cautiously. It was possible that one of the kids had left their window open and the wind had blown it shut…

The wind chimes outside the living room window, above her small garden, weren’t swaying in the slightest. Her heart rate increased as she debated going upstairs Standing at the foot of the stairs she waited. No other unexplainable noises came from the second floor. Her cell phone buzzing in her pocket caused her to jump and nearly knock off a family portrait from the wall. Steadying it back, she took a deep breath. Michelle was usually not the jumpy type. Especially not like the women in the horror movies that Brad enjoyed.

‘Be home in five. Seems like a hot chocolate night.’

‘Already on it.’

“Get ahold of yourself. Houses make noises,” she whispered fiercely, heading back to the kitchen to prep the hot chocolate.
