Chapter Eight

We drove a short distance to an enormous mansion that sat on the highest point of the island. From the house, several different structures could be seen, including the aircraft hanger we had just left. There was also a large metal building that looked like a warehouse, and several igloo-shaped concrete buildings that looked like the ammunition storage buildings that dotted the army post I had been stationed at several years before.

Once at the mansion, everyone wordlessly piled out of the Escalade and walked the short distance to the house. Stavros motioned me inside, and once in the house, walked toward what appeared to be a study. I followed him into a room outfitted as an office. Books lined every wall. From my vantage point, I could see that they were in a multitude of languages. Many of the English titles that I could read were books on military matters, from historical works to books about arms and weapons.

Stavros took a seat behind the desk, and motioned for me to sit in the chair across from him. Without being beckoned, Bella sat in the chair next to me. She had amused smile on her face.

“Michael, that was bad news about your job,” Stavros began. “But perhaps it has opened up a new opportunity for you.”

“Bella told me about your military experience, and you have certain skills that I would find useful here.”

I was confused. I had served as an Army officer after I got out of college. It was a little short of six years before I decided that the money was better in the civilian sector. I had served in a number of staff assignments before leaving the service as a Captain. I had never served in combat. I had never had a prospective employer find anything about my service remarkable enough to do anything other than thank me for being a veteran. It wasn’t like I was the guy that had shot Bin Laden or anything.

“Hang on, Stavros,” I stopped him, even holding up my hand like a traffic cop. “Why don’t you start with what exactly it is that you do for a living.”

“Oh, I have my fingers in a number of pies,” Stavros told me. “Shipping, transportation, that sort of thing.”

“But what I need your help with is one of my ventures that I don’t talk much about,” he smirked. “But it’s very lucrative.”

“What’s that?” He clearly had my interest now.

“Have you ever heard of a company called Executive Changes?” he asked.

“Nope.”

“Don’t worry,” Stavros told me. “Most people haven’t. And you certainly won’t find a company website on the internet.”

“Our customers know how to find us,” he grinned.

“Go on,” I didn’t know where this was headed.

“Well, Executive Changes could use a man like you to help with planning some of our ventures,” Stavros said. “A man with experience on a military planning staff can always be found useful.”

“Doing what?”

“Planning our operations,” he said simply.

“What kind of operations?” I was growing tired of the cat-and-mouse with Stavros.
