Life had its moments, and sometimes the simplest moments were the most fulfilling. Wipers plowed snow from the windshield of Peel’s sedan, revealing Maryland’s picturesque night lights. The car’s heater warmed his hands like his vacuum suit never could, and Nicola in the passenger seat wore a smile that banished the last lingering chill from his heart. These were the moments that Peel lived for, every day.

Safely back on Earth with a better-than-expected debriefing with Joss Plenary behind him, they had given him a day’s leave. Still assigned to the INFINITE EYE investigation, but the next stage could wait until tomorrow. He needed a rest because wormhole travel had proved exhausting and stressful, and a single day to see Nicola again was worth a week of recovering alone.

He held Nicola’s hand tightly when he didn’t need to shift gears. He reflected on how comforting the mundane world could be, of car lights and road signs, of snow, and the touch of someone he loved.

“I thought about your request, I thought about it a lot while I was away.”

Nicola’s eyes lit up. “And...?”

“And I spoke to Plenary. He’s more than happy to take you onboard, in fact, he almost jumped at it.”

“Oh...” Releasing her grip on his hand, Nicola’s rosy expression deflated. For a long time, she said nothing. She wouldn’t look at him. “I was hoping you’d choose the other option?”

“I thought you’d be happy?”

“I’m happy you decided, I guess.”

Peel didn’t answer, not sure what to say.

A few minutes later they parked outside Jack Dixon and his girlfriend Jennifer’s house in Maryland, visiting for dinner. When Peel stopped the engine, neither he nor Nicola made any effort to get out of the car and trundle up the path. Without the engine running it would soon get cold inside, yet neither would be the first to move.

“You’re not happy?”

“I thought the idea of settling down, getting married and starting a family would appeal to you more than this crusade that you and your buddy Jack have started.”

Peel gripped the steering wheel until his knuckles turned white. He knew he should be more sympathetic to Nicola’s desires, but he also knew who he was, what kind of man he had become, and what he must do. Treadwell and her team were fools even if their intentions were noble, and if he didn’t stop her, they could unleash all kinds of horrendous disasters upon the world. It was not a world he wanted to live in.

“Nicola...” He didn’t know where to begin, so he gave himself a moment to collect his thoughts, and thankfully Nicola gave him the time to do so. “Nicola, this last assignment I undertook, you’re right when you say it was dangerous, because I did almost die. I’ve lied to you. I’ve lied to you many times about this, and now I’m sorry that I did. But you know what? Just like what we achieved together in Nevada, I need to achieve the same outcome on this assignment. I
