CHAPTER 24

Shari grabbed her arm as Annabeth clamped her own hand over her mouth to keep in the scream that rose into her throat.

“Come on!” Shari headed back down the staircase. “I’ve been wondering where you’ve been.”

“I found this staircase and decided to see where it led. I found this room—”

“Tell me about it later. Let’s get back downstairs before someone notices we’re missing and comes to look for us.”

“Oh God, I forgot to close the door back.” Annabeth turned to go back, but Shari grabbed her arm.

“There’s not enough time.” They raced down the flight of stairs and turned down the hallway toward the staircase to the first floor.

Just then, Jenna topped the stairs from the first floor, and Shari and Annabeth stopped in the hallway outside the sisters’ suites.

“What are you doing up here?” Jenna’s eyes narrowed.

“Uh…”

“Shari was looking for a bathroom when I came in to use one myself. I wanted to show her your awesome suites before we returned to the party. Then, we saw the workout room, which is much nicer and smells much better than the campus gym. I could definitely get my sweat on in there.” Annabeth patted her midsection. She knew she was rambling, but the words quickly fell out of her mouth. “I’m determined not to give in to the Freshmen Fifteen. You were right the other night. You are so lucky to have such a gorgeous place to live on campus, Jenna,” Annabeth gushed.

Shari nodded. “So lucky. It’s beautiful.”

Jenna smiled. “I know! It really is nice.” Her smile faded. “Now, if you ladies are done pilfering through the house, you can follow me back to the fête.”

“Of course.” Shari gave Annabeth a look and then took off down the stairs to the first floor, and Annabeth followed, with Jenna bringing up the rear. Annabeth hoped she had covered them well enough. She was so not cut out for the Nancy Drew bit. If someone looked at her hands shaking, they would know she had been up to no good.

Annabeth made her way back to the table at which Nana sat. A few older ladies had joined her. The crowd had begun to disperse, and Annabeth found herself yawning. It had been a long afternoon.

“You look tired, baby girl. Why don’t you go take a nap? I really should be getting home.” She waved a few fingers at the other women at their table. “Nice to catch up with you ladies.” As they approached the Zeta House, Nana stood and hooked her arm in Annabeth’s. “I missed a few soaps and true crime programs from this week that I’ve got to catch up on.” Her eyes crinkled. “Such is the life of grandmothers.”

“I think I’ll go back to the dorm soon. I’m pretty tired. I’ve got some studying to do tonight, too.”

“Walk out with me to the car,” said Nana. “I’ve got some things for you.”

Annabeth followed her through the side gate covered with a canopy of flowering jasmine vines. The scent swirled around their heads as they ventured through.
