CHAPTER TEN

Absolute frenetic anxiety set in at exactly four o’clock that afternoon on the wharf. No further poultice of encouragement from Father Lucky could overcome the morose feelings which had slowly infected Rabbi Susan Aaron-Hetterick during the interval. Susan distinctly remembered saying they would meet around two. She and Lucky had wandered, waited and worried long enough. She was sick to her stomach over agonizing about Barney, Beth and the boys’ whereabouts. Lucky mirrored Susan’s feelings with his concern about them and Led.

“Susan, we have to get back to the ship. We’ve done all we can do here with the local authorities. The ship is not scheduled to sail away until eight tonight. That gives us time to ask the ship’s security to get involve. I’m sure the Captain will bend over backwards to help us find them.” Lucky was attempting his last ditch effort to motivate Susan, as much as himself.

“This is a nightmare, Lucky. My whole family and Led…missing…gone,” Susan was inconsolable.

“We’ve done everything we could. The local authorities said they would send out the SAR boat and helicopter. They assured us that this was an all too common happening that tourist got themselves lost around the island. I’m sure they know every nook and cranny of the island’s shoreline.”

“But, what if they got swept out into the open sea? Possibly the boat overturned. I can’t think straight anymore. All the people I’ve helped through crisis and now that I’m in the middle of my own, I don’t know which way to turn.”

“The Master of the Wonder Star has been notified. The local police confirmed that they would work hand in glove with the ship’s security. And, I’m confident that they’ll come up with some kind of rescue plan.” As Lucky shared that last retort to Susan’s worry, the shuttle boat arrived to take them back to the ship. The short ride back to the docked ship seemed an everlasting eternity plus.

The Master of the Wonder Star was nervously pacing back and forth as he waited by the Guest gangway for his distraught passengers. God bless him. Captain Fred Barry, a former Canadian Navy ship driver, had worked his way up the ladder in the cruise ship industry following his naval career. He was awarded the distinction of bringing out RDC’s latest and greatest floating hotel. A promise of promotion to a position as senior vice president in charge of RDC’s navigation department was the carrot on the stick they offered him following a successful completion of this tour of duty. In effect, he would become the Commodore over the entire RDC stable of cruise ship captains.

“Rabbi Aaron-Hetterick, Father Harris, I’m so pleased that you made it back to the ship. I’m certain, along with the St. Maartin authorities and our security team, that we will recover your family, Rabbi Aaron-Hetterick, and your friend, Father Harris. Please come with me. I’ve arranged to have a meeting in my stateroom with the principals of my staff.” The usual security
