"SO, WHAT'D YOU CALL us here for?"
Simon's eyes lit up when he saw the extra-large pepperoni pizza on the table. Making himself comfortable on the sofa, he helped himself to a slice.
"I mean, not that I don't enjoy your company and all..."
"Would you let the girl talk," Lucia said, swatting him on the back of the head.
"Hey, not the hair!" he said, fixing some unseen stray strand.
I smiled. "Okay. So, I've asked you three to come here so I could get some background story on this place. I really want to understand the things that have happened to me since I got here."
When I saw Simon reach for another slice, I said, "You might want to hear this before you wolf another slice down. It's kinda important."
At his perplexed look, I continued, "As you know, the first thing that happened to me was that gum on my shoe thing. Perfectly harmless. Same day, I had the Barbies tell me off for falling on Jessica's foot at the cafeteria. Also harmless, and you know I told her off for that. What I didn't tell you was after that, at the party, something completely crazy and out-of-hand happened."
I detailed to them how I started to get high, possibly after a spiked drink, after Adrienne came to speak with me. And that soon after, two guys I didn't know lured me into a room and locked me in. When I started to talk about how they began to push me down and undress me, April started to cry, and Lucia's complexion turned as white as sheet.
Simon frowned. "Don't forget Victor. He spoke to you as well that night - he could also have easily switched up your drink."
For some reason I found the idea of Victor hurting me difficult to fathom.
"These guys, they told me their names - Brett and Chad - and one let slip Adrienne's name."
“Adrienne?”
“Wow.”
“Oh my god!”
Their shocked expressions mirrored each other’s. “Why would she do that? What on earth could you have done to deserve such treatment?” It was a question I asked myself time and time again.
"Cara. I need to know - did they hurt you?" Lucia asked.
I shook my head. "I managed to call some random number on my phone before they threw it against the wall. Jack and Lily came running and Jack beat one of them up."
Simon looked confused. "How do you know them?"
"They're my neighbors. I know we don't talk much at school but Jack's my ride to school almost everyday since school started."
"This is so messed up," Simon said, rubbing the back of his head.
"Look. Between Jessica and Adrienne, Adrienne's been known to be more vindictive. But to the extent of hiring someone to rape you? I don't think she's that evil. And Jessica, well, she might be unhappy - okay, more than unhappy - with you and Victor getting along, but I don't see her doing that, either."
"I'm tutoring him in biology," I added, for what it was worth.
"Still."
April had stopped sobbing and was now approaching me with her arms open.
