WELCOME

LITTLE

A’LE’INN

There was a large-eyed alien painted on the sign next to the name. Next to the sign, an old-time tow truck was parked. Dangling from the back of it was a replica flying saucer. There was only one other vehicle parked in the dirt lot. Dylan got out and stretched. He took his smartphone from his pocket and snapped a few digital photos of the sign and the tow truck. He knew Helen would get a kick out of them. Several cars passed on the highway. One of them honked at him as he walked toward the restaurant. He could see why the government would pick this area to set up shop and do alien research. There was nothing in all directions.

A scruffy old man was cleaning the bar to his right as he entered the wind bleached structure. The first thing he saw was the pool table to the left and the restaurant area set further back on that side. The gift shop started at the end of the bar on the right. There were alien memorabilia everywhere upon the walls.

“Welcome to The A’le’inn!” The man said, placing the towel he had been using over his shoulder. He extended a hand. “I’m Bill. My wife Patty’s over there.”

He didn’t even have enough time to point before Patty, a portly woman with a cheerful smile, was off her chair and floating gracefully toward him, cup of coffee in one hand. She was a portly woman with a cheerful smile. She switched the cup to her left hand and shook his with the free one. She was wearing a green apron decorated with the business name and alien logo below it.

“Welcome to The Little A’le’inn! I’m Patty.”

“Dylan.” He said, releasing her hand.

“How can we help you today?”

“Well, I hear word that you guys serve up a mean Alien Burger.”

“I’m not sure how ‘mean’ it is, but we’d be glad to grill one up for you if you’re interested.”

“I am and I’ve got a few questions while I wait if you have a few minutes.”

“Time’s all we’ve got out here. Not much traffic this month. Have a seat over here and I’ll bring you a drink. What would you like?”

“Sweet tea if you have some.”

“Sure do. I’ll be right back.”

She twirled away as he thanked her. Bill was in the kitchen and Dylan could already hear the meat grilling. The smell didn’t reach him until Patty brought him his tea.

He was studying the various alien-related posters and pictures mounted on the back wall.

“Thank you, Patty. Got a few minutes?”

“Sure do. What did you want to know about Area 51?”

“Well, first, I was told to tell you That Caleb sent me.”

He saw her eyes light up with recognition.

“Oh, how is he? Haven’t seen him for quite a while. Such a sweet man.” Patty whispered the last part so that Bill could not hear it in the kitchen.

“He’s doing good.” Dylan pulled the photo of Homer from his pocket and set it upon the table in front of Patty.
