Jargon

All this talk of ram and ROM, bits and bytes, CP/M and DBM, single and double density, buffers and peripherals . . . It's enough to drive anyone away whimpering.

But cooks don't think twice about the extensive vocabulary of the kitchen. Sports fans wield a vast jargon; incredible specialized knowledge is needed to follow a football game. Everybody knows at least fifty terms for automobile anatomy. An ordinary-home stereo has at least forty specialized terms,[14] most of them printed on the outside controls, but nobody's put off by stereos.

Of course, we've had years to assimilate all this. And we've forgotten that thirty years ago, when "hi-fi" was new, most people were dismayed by the specialized new terminology.

Computer jargon is neither extensive nor forbidding. It's just new, and it takes time. After a few months, new computer users find themselves chattering away happily about ram and rom– and it actually means something to them!
