Lying Time

I spent the better part of the morning trying to make sense of that page, but in the end simply bookmarked it and closed the browser. Whoever had written that mess needed crazy pills a lot more than I did.

I took a shower and made myself presentable. Meghan might have been the fashion conscious one, but I could manage the basics. Black jeans and a tank-top was hard to screw up.

I was back on the computer not long after lunch trying to organize my thoughts and come up with some path forward. The ever-present crumb goblin, Hobbes the Hungry, sat on the counter next to me. Occasionally he'd place a paw on the keys in an effort to provide tech support or solicit scratches.

"I haven't made much headway here, Hobbes. I have no idea where Meghan is. I haven't found anything beyond some crazy ramblings about cosmic power bullshit when it comes to these symbols on my hand, and Porter is either a master spy able to avoid the web of social media, or Marlin's pet name for his wife is Porter and her real name is Sheila."

Hobbes bit down on the corner of the screen. I pushed him off.

"I know. Bad computer! But it’s the only one we have so let's not break it just yet."

If cats could frown I was pretty sure that's what Hobbes did.

I started to close the laptop screen when something red caught my eye.

New message?

I muscled the cat out of the way and opened up the email application.

My heart skipped a beat when I realized it was from the Tampa Police Department.

"They found my phone, Hobbes!"

If the cat cared, he didn't show it.

I grabbed one of the little pads of paper the leasing company had been nice enough to leave all over the apartment and copied down the address.

"It's downtown.” I checked the address a second time. "I can walk there, Hobbes."

The cat flicked his tail once.

"Right, don't get too excited or anything. If I can get my phone I can find Meghan's. We set up those 'find me' apps in college, remember? If she's got her phone on, then I can find her."

I closed the laptop screen and shoved the address in my pocket, then stopped into the bathroom to put something in the way of a face on.

For the briefest of seconds, it wasn't my eyes that greeted me in the mirror, it was Meghan's, black as pitch and swirling with a cruel malevolence.

I might be able to find her phone, but what Meghan would I find attached to it when I did?
