Chapter Nineteen

Sierra

"Auntie!" My niece rips open their front door and rushes towards me, hugging my thighs with a tight squeeze. Her bursting energy has me smiling softly when I reach down and plant an exaggerated kiss on her head.

"Hey, kiddo. Have you been behaving?"

“Of course!" She flashes me a toothy grin, her left hand planted on a jutted hip. Wearing a pair of dark blue jeans with iron-on patches across the knees and a shirt with a beagle eating a donut triple its size, she couldn’t possibly be any cuter.

"That's what I like to hear. Now where's your momma?" I reach up to smooth the hairs that have blown out of place by the wind outside. When my fingers get caught in a giant knot, I know that it’s already too late to salvage it. Leaving my hair down after my shower seemed like a good idea at the time, however that may just have been because Braden didn’t exactly leave me much time to get ready after sneaking in the shower and eating me for breakfast.

Liz turns towards the back of the house and raises her small hand to point in the direction of the patio door. "The backyard. We’re raking leaves!"

"Let's go then. We're wasting daylight," I tease. The young, spitting image of my sister bolts towards the door. I pull it open for her and watch, amused, as she sprints off to one of the three piles of orange, brown, and yellow leaves. Clare stands with a rake in her hand, adding to the already giant third pile.

I whistle to grab my sister’s attention and wave when she lifts her head, smiling so wide her white teeth shine in the sun. She throws the rake in the pile of leaves without hesitation, pats her hands on her coverall-clad thighs, and sidesteps the battery operated, hot-pink childrens car resting on the grass before walking over to me.

"What are you doing here? Not like I mind the surprise visit." She pulls me into a tight hug. She smells like the pumpkin scented candles she always has burning inside. My sister is a first class candle hoarder, always burning a few at a time that match the current season. It makes gift gifting easy.

"I was in the neighbourhood. Figured I might as well visit my beautiful sister while I'm here.”

"That's what I like to hear. Come inside. I have iced tea in the fridge. Liz, come inside when you’re done playing in the leaves!"

A hand clamps around my wrist as Clare pulls me inside, a slight bounce in her step. Her beaming attitude isn’t exactly a rare sight, but it still has me curious. She's usually happy, but not this happy. I mean, happily raking the leaves? With today’s wind? No, not a chance.

I sit down on one of the bar stools lining the small kitchen island as she grabs the pitcher from the fridge and pours me a large glass. Placing the dew-covered glass in front of me, she flops down beside me.
