Interphalangeal Joint Distraction

Purpose: Increase general joint play at the IPJ, interphalangeal ROM, articular nutrition, and decrease pain

Patient’s Position

Patient’s position: Supine or sitting with the involved hand as close to the plinth’s long axis edge as possible (lateral) with the arm resting on the table in the pronated position (Figure 5-13)

Clinician’s Position

Clinician’s position: Standing at the end of the plinth perpendicular to the joint

Clinician’s stabilizing hand: The cranial hand grips the head of the proximal phalanx (respective to the joint be mobilized) with the thumb on the dorsal surface and the index finger on the volar surface.

Clinician’s mobilizing hand: The caudal hand grips the base of the distal phalanx (respective to the joint be mobilized) with the thumb on the dorsal surface and the index finger on the volar surface.
