Wednesday dawned clear and bright, a good day for our trip to Buffalo. I was excited to see the Barracudas play against Buffalo’s team, the Warriors. Nick had gotten fantastic tickets for Cole and me; we’d be sitting a few rows above the visitors’ bench, so we’d see the Barracudas on and off the ice. Cole had mentioned several times that the gay Barracudas were heroes as out and proud players, and they were heroes to me, too. The gay and straight players alike were the best friends I’d ever had. They never gave up on me, even when I gave up on myself.

I’d reserved a room for us in the Hyatt Regency, the Barracudas’ team hotel, and we’d be able to hang out with the boys as late as they wanted. Since Buffalo was less than an hour’s drive from Winscombe, Cole and I could head back after seeing the Barracudas off on Thursday morning. We’d be home in time for his afternoon class and my hockey practice.

I was excited to introduce Cole as my boyfriend, but there were also nerves at play. Everyone in the world but Cole, Diana, and Kendall knew me as straight. I texted with Nick and Blake a few times a week, and I’d considered telling them about Cole, but that was a nonstarter. My friends had held me when I was too broken to sit up, and they deserved to hear something so important in person.

I’d asked Rogan to lead the Lions’ Wednesday afternoon practice. After going to the office in the morning to take care of some paperwork about the coming weekend’s road trip, I met Cole back home for a quick lunch. We made it to Buffalo before three, giving us time to check into the hotel and take a nap before the game.

“Wow, this is beautiful.” Cole turned in a full circle, taking in the large room with its plush, gray furniture and king-size bed. His wide-eyed joy made me grin as he said, “Thank you so much. I’ve never stayed in a room this nice before.” He looked to the side and gasped as he ran to an enormous window. I went over beside him and wrapped an arm around his shoulders as he gaped at Lake Erie. The bright sun made the cobalt blue water sparkle, and the view was impressive from our fourteenth-floor vantage point.

I gave his shoulders a squeeze. “Like it, baby?”

“I feel like I’m in a movie.” He looked up at me wearing a huge smile, and I leaned over to brush our lips together. The kiss began sweet but flamed into white-hot heat. Drawing away, he licked his lips. “Let me show you how wonderful you are—how much I appreciate all this.” He sank to his knees and reached for my belt.

“Whoa!” Catching his hands, I pulled him back to his feet. “If you want to do that, I’m all in, but you never owe me sex for anything. I’ll be thrilled to lie down and hold you until we fall asleep.
