Chapter Eight

Iker’s house was secluded, set on several acres with no neighbors close by. It was a small three-bedroom ranch-style, uncluttered and sparsely furnished. “Do you want the second bedroom, or…?”

Gael knew what he wanted. Do I dare to ask? Or should I just say it? Iker had said he’d liked it when Gael took control, but that’d only been in regards to sex. Then again, Iker has asked him a question. “Duff can have the guest room.”

The smile Iker gave him was full of promises that made Gael’s libido flare to life. “Yeah, he can sleep in the guest room.”

“It’s this way.” Iker gestured for Duff to follow him.

Duff limped after Iker. “Thanks.”

Gael took the moment alone to look around. The interior of the house was the same peach as the exterior. The walls were unadorned for the most part. Only the living area had anything hanging up—a clock made out of a slice of oak tree, and a woven tapestry of mountains and blue skies. Gael liked the colors used for the mountains—a blend of purples, greys, and green. He wanted to touch it, but another item in the room caught his attention.

There, on top of the entertainment center, was a picture in a gilded frame. Gael’s chest felt very tight as he walked over to look at the image there.

He picked the frame up, unable to look away from the photograph of Iker—much younger, possibly still a teenager, even—with his arms around a beautiful dark-haired girl. The two of them were staring at each other and smiling as if they were the only people in the world. Gael traced the girl’s hair with one finger. He could feel the love that photo had captured.

“Her name was Ilena.”

Gael startled and spun around to find Iker watching him.

Iker strode over to stand beside him and look at the picture. “Ilena Ramos,” he said quietly. “We were so young there. Fifteen and sixteen. She was older than me.”

Gael knew their love story didn’t have a happy ending, or else Iker wouldn’t be there with him now. “What happened?”

Iker touched the photograph in an almost identical manner as Gael had. “I told you that wolf shifters have destined mates. When we meet our mate, that’s it for us. No one else will ever do.”

Gael’s heart raced. He was Iker’s destined mate. He meant something important to Iker. So why was he suddenly afraid?

Iker took the frame from his hands and set it back in its place. Then he stepped in front of Gael. There was pain and worry in his dark eyes. Gael was already learning how to read the man.

“We’re only supposed to have one mate,” Iker said, his voice raspy. “One in a lifetime. I’ve never heard of anyone being an exception. If we lose our mate, that’s it for us, sexually, romantically. Many shifters die when—or shortly after—their mate does.”

“What are you saying?” Gael prodded, tension building as he tried to fathom what Iker was working up to telling him.
