Alfie’s happy to be home, but not half as happy as I am. My house is my sanctuary, and I’m always glad to step through the front door. However, today I can’t, because my front door is blocked by vases and vases of different coloured roses. Their perfume is overwhelming, as I bend to pick up a large crystal vase containing at least two dozen red roses and I immediately know whom they’re from. I place some to the side as I unlock the door quickly, still carrying the vase, before placing it on the table in the dining room. He must have done this today. I go and collect the rest of the vases and place them around the house. There’s hardly a surface that doesn’t contain roses. The house smells of the blooms. I pick the card from each bunch, and when I have them all, I sit at my table and read them one by one. The first one I look at says:

I can explain.

Call me.
