Jada Mackerel
When the door to Jadaâs houseboat opens after I say goodbye to Dave, I perk up, waving her down. The sun is still rising, highlighting my movements just enough for her to see me flagging her attention.
Jada grins at me and trots in my direction with her backpack over her shoulders. âGood morning, bestie.â
I smile at the greeting because itâs just about the greatest one a girl can get. âGood morning yourself, bestie. You off to work?â
Jadaâs head bobs. âIâve got a display to finish up in the hallway before school starts, so I need to get cracking on it.â
âDo you need help? My shift doesnât start for another hour.â
Jadaâs brow quirks. âAnd you just so happened to be hanging around the shore for no reason?â
I motion to Dave, who is far enough away from us that he canât overhear. âI was crossing a suspect off the list.â
Jada and I trot to the grass. The dogs follow behind while they enjoy their own little conversation of snorts and whines. I love that they have each other.
Jada has several rolls of colored paper sticking out of her backpack, bobbing along with plenty of pep in her step. Her box braids with pink thread running through them are pulled back with a yellow ribbon, showing off her large eyes and pretty smile. âItâs draw your favorite fish week,â Jada explains. âMy kindergarteners are drawing their fish, practicing their cutting skills to cut them out, and then theyâre going to tape them to the board in the hallway so their art can be on display.â She motions to herself. âI donât want to call myself a creative genius, but if youâre not, then I guess Iâll have to pick up the megaphone and announce it to the world myself.â
I cast her an adoring look. âYouâre a creative genius if Iâve ever seen one.â My arms swing at my sides while we walk in tandem. âSeriously, though. Thatâs very cool.â
âMy fish is a Jada mackerel. She swims at top speed and never needs caffeine to keep active, but she caffeinates on the weekends just to live on the edge. She has pink scales, and she gives fantastic fin high-fives.â
I snicker at the nature of the project. âThat is creative. I suppose my fish would be just figuring out how to navigate the waters. But sheâs got two little fish by her side, and tends to swim near the Jada mackerel, so I think sheâll find her way eventually.â
Jada bumps her hip to mine. âI know she will. Stick by the water, and you wonât stay lost for long.â She rolls her eyes. âI know thatâs such an Apple Blossom Bay thing to say, but it never stops being true. The water figures you out when youâre not sure who you want to be.â
I take in her wisdom and mull it over while we walk.
When we reach her school, I canât help the sweet coo that escapes me once we go into the building and round the hallways that lead to her classroom.
