Gendered restrooms can cause transgender people a unique amount of stress, especially as laws determining access can vary state by state.

In addition to amplifying their dysphoria, transphobia can expose gender-variant individuals to further hardships. The 2015 US Transgender Survey reported high rates of harassment, economic hardship, employment instability, and homelessness in the trans population, all stemming from transphobia. Nearly half of respondents, for example, reported having been verbally harassed in the past year. As of 2016, due to increasing legal instability and attacks on transgender people specifically in the United States, transphobia has also led to the barring of transgender people from access to public restroom facilities and health care coverage. One in ten respondents to the 2015 US Transgender Survey reported having been denied access to a restroom in the prior year, with many more reporting having to avoid using a public restroom or seeking health care due to fear of mistreatment.
