Adoption

For couples who have been unable to conceive either naturally or with the help of fertility treatment, it is important to remember that there is another way of building a family – adoption. The focus of adoption in the twenty-first century is on finding loving homes for children whose birth parents cannot care for them, rather than finding solutions for couples who can’t have their own children. Like assisted conception, adoption is not for everyone, but it is right for some couples – and, indeed, some single people – and can prove to be enormously rewarding.

The charity First4Adoption (see Useful addresses) says that there are around 4000 children in the UK looking for new families. They come from a variety of ethnic and religious backgrounds. Over half are sibling groups, some are school age, some have special needs. If you want to adopt you have to be over 21, but there is no upper age limit. You can be married or single, straight or gay, able-bodied or disabled, from any ethnic background, and you don’t have to own your own home or be well-off. It is also worth contacting Adoption UK (see Useful addresses) which is a support group for adoptive parents and those planning or hoping to adopt.
