Making things float

Elizabeth once saw floating paper cranes as the centrepiece at a dinner party. The trick to this was to fill a large transparent box with a gas called sulfur hexafluoride. Because this gas is six times as heavy as air, lightweight objects can float on the gas itself. To make the display even more eye-catching, you can also sprinkle sparkle dust onto the gas – the combination of the floating objects and shiny sparkles makes the entire display a truly magical one. (Sulfur hexafluoride has an added quirk: when inhaled, it makes your voice deeper – sort of the opposite of how helium gives you a squeaky voice.)
