Serena followed Yolanda out of the cottage. Her mind was spinning. The universe had shifted amongst the stars, changing Serena’s fate. A cosmic dance had begun. Serena was a hereditary witch, a witch by birthright. She had the ability to conjure magic to change the course of her life forever.

But what made her balk more than anything was the discovery that she was no longer alone. She had family, a great-aunt who now walked beside her in the woods. To her, that was the pinnacle of all she had witnessed, the greatest gift.

Yolanda led Serena through a copse of evergreens, stopping at a small clearing behind her house. Tall elm trees formed a circle surrounding a lush herb garden. The long tree limbs formed natural shelves that created a barrier wall where flowers bloomed. An impressive array of plants grew wild and tall, rows of herbs stretched forth from the ground like an emerald city on the earth. A pentagram made from bricks sat in the center of the garden.

Serena recognized many of the plants that were carefully tended. Sage, thyme, basil, rosemary, wormwort, mugwort, valerian, echinacea, lemon balm, bee balm and pennyroyal grew inside each corner of the five-point star. The earth inside the star was as crimson as the blood racing through Serena’s veins.

Yolanda pointed to the pentagram. “The pentagram is sacred to us,” she explained. “The four lower points represent the four aspects of the world—earth, water, air, and fire. The fifth point at the top represents creative spirit over all creation. Mind over matter, girl. The star is always encircled by a wheel, representing the continual flow of life and energy. The pentagram reminds us we can bring Spirit to Earth.” Yolanda paused beside the large circle, silent for a moment before looking back up at Serena. “Apply this to every aspect of your daily life. The symbol will help you engage in spiritual thought. Never underestimate the power of symbols, for they are extremely valuable to witches. They not only prepare us for a magical mood, but they aid us to manifest our inner power.”

Yolanda bent down to pluck a few mugwort leaves. She shuffled over to a bench made from an elm tree and sank down, gesturing for Serena to join her. She did, and Yolanda dropped her leaves into a waiting mortar. She held it out to Serena. “Now spit,” she instructed.

Serena spat into the mortar, feeling silly, but Yolanda seemed satisfied and pointed to a patch of dirt inside the pentagram. “Grab a handful of the blood and dirt and add it to the mixture.” Serena bent beside the pentagram with unease and scooped a handful of red earth, wondering if it truly was made from blood, but not wanting to ask in case it was. She returned to her place beside Yolanda and accepted her outstretched mortar.

Yolanda’s sharp eyes tracked her movement, missing nothing. “Now repeat after me, girl, and chant these words.
