Sunday, I stopped by the brewery on my way to Knoxâs and grabbed a few of our nicer in-house brews, specifically the one I knew he liked. I figured if we were staying in and watching movies, it would be nice to have something to help him relax.
Weâd texted a few times that morning and planned to meet up around three. He lived above the used bookstore on the main street, so I parked around the back and made my way to the entrance, where he said I could access the stairs to his apartment.
Iâd never been in the loft apartments above the old storefronts, but Iâd heard they were nice. Josiah had told me they were studio-style and ridiculously spacious. But when Knox let me in, I was still shocked at how much room he had compared to my little cottage house.
The ceilings were well over twenty feet high, and the stylish, bricked exterior walls were rustic yet inviting. They went well with the dark hardwood floors and open concept. It was all one giant room, but Knoxâs bedroom was separated by a few folding screens in a far corner. His living space was gorgeous, with warm earth tones, furniture, and plants. I was pleasantly surprised. Somehow, Iâd had the impression Bachelor Knox would have a more simplistic setup.
It was clear he took pride in his home and had taken pains to make it his own.
There was a low hanging kitchen rack above a massive granite-topped island where numerous stainless steel pots and pans hung. A beautiful chandelier sat above a four-piece dinette set off to the side. The appliances were antiques but sparkled white and chrome in the low lit room. Everything was tidy and in good repair.
âThis place is incredible. I had no idea how nice it was above the stores on the main road, but wow.â
âYeah, Jasperâs best-kept secret. Iâve been here a while. Mr. G, my landlord, who owns the bookstore downstairs, offered it to me years ago. My mother is one of his favorite customers, and she was talking about her son wanting to move out, and the next I know, my dad is shoving my belongings into his truck, and itâs bye-bye Knox.â
I chuckled. âHow old were you when you moved out?â
âTwenty-one. I mean, thatâs not bad, right? It wasnât like I was planning to stay home forever, but Mom and Dad thought it was time. I guess with as many kids as they raised, they were ready to start shedding a few.â
âWhen I left home, my mother cried for a week. I think she would have kept me in her back pocket until I was eighty if it was up to her.â
Knox laughed and ducked his head. Always shy. âShe sounds great.â
âShe is. Here.â I held out the collection of beers Iâd brought. âI thought we might like a drink later.â
âAwesome. Thanks.â He took them to the fridge while I looked around.
The windows overlooking the main street were those long, thin type that started at floor level and climbed higher than my six feet.
