chapter nine

Matthew 12:31

Therefore, I tell you, every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven people, but the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven.

“Beg for your sins,” I seethed, my pulse racing as I glowered down at the top of Theodora’s black head.

Her dark eyes flicked up to mine, her teeth barred. “I will not.”

I blinked down at her, my jaw growing tight as my teeth grated together. Did she not want to be saved? Have all of our lessons been for naught? No. Impossible. Something else was going on here and I would bet my wings it had to do with the cherub. It had been several days of her fighting during our lessons now since I’d caught her with the cherub at the cathedral. That would be dealt with, but for now, I must make Theodora see the way of thein Father. I must break the darkness shrouding her thoughts and force her into the light once more. It was my job to save her, and I wouldn’t let a slight such as this make me lose my focus now.

My robes billowed up around my legs as I dropped down to crouch before her, our breaths melding together as I leaned into her space. Her teeth clacked as they snapped at me, but I held my ground, ignoring her outburst. ’Twas the ways of Satan that made her act as such, and I was to rid all of the darkness that had seeped into her over the last few days. The sweat from her skin mixed with the soft earthy sent of her that made my mouth water with the temptation to taste it.

“Beg for your sins to be forgiven, Theodora, and I shall spare you of punishment.” My hand raised to stroke a lone tear from her cheek, my eyes narrowing when she pulled away. “May thy Lord grant me the patience to fulfill my duties and cast away the shadows plaguing your heart without a cruel hand on thine skin should you corporate.”

Her throat bobbed as she swallowed, her anger subsiding just enough to let reasoning trickle into her muddied mind. I knew she preferred our lessons without physical punishment, and I was granting her that opportunity should she take it. If she refused, I didn’t think I had enough will power to hold back any longer.

Theodora’s breath puffed along my lips as she began to speak, her voice thick and throaty, “In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Bless me, Father, for I have sinned. It has been three days since my last confession.”

The words were spat from her mouth, gritted through her teeth, but each one made my heart thump hard in my chest. Seeing her come into the light was always thrilling.

“I refused to listen to Archangel Raphael’s rules and continued to see the cherub.”

My palms fell heavily on her shoulders, my thumbs rubbing along the soft skin on her collarbones, strummed along the pulse beating at the base of her neck as she glared through black pits up at me.
